Do good this year: a Thanksgiving fitness plan that gives back

Hey guys! Hope you’re having a good week. I’m getting busier with clients fitting in their last minute sessions before the big Thanksgiving weekend arrives… everyone wants to feel like they can really pack in the turkey! Are you amping up your workouts knowing the food-fest is coming next week?

In previous years I’ve fit in some exercise before the big meal. Two years ago my husband did his own Turkey Trot, running about 6 miles from my parents’ house to my sister’s house, where Thanksgiving dinner was being held. I didn’t want to commit to that many (uphill) miles, so I ran my own course that morning.

Last year we rocked out at an official 4-mile Turkey Trot, where I competed for a whole pie. Remember that one?

This year my family is collectively going to a yoga class, one that is friendly for yogis and pregnant yogis–we don’t discriminate! My husband still plans on his Turkey Trot, but I’m safely staying at home, opting for a nice hot shower instead. ūüôā

So I saw an article in the Wall Street Journal about Thanksgiving day fitness. Apparently my own fitness-on-the-big-day tradition is becoming popular everywhere else, too! SoulCycle (COMING SOON TO MIAMI!) is hosting a 90-minute Turkey Burn spin class, cities everywhere are running various Turkey Trots, and CrossFit boxes have holiday-themed WODs (workout of the day).

So after reading about all these fitness endeavors, I thought, why not go the extra mile (pun intended) and workout for a good cause? You could organize a group run that starts at a Red Cross donation spot, everyone drops off their goods, and then you all go out for a run together.

Another activity could involve everyone bringing canned goods and dropping them off at a local food bank.

Another great idea? Find a local family in need and host a fundraiser for them–it could be a by-donation bootcamp, yoga class, whatever!
