My new obsession: all-natural DIY house cleaner – CASTILE SOAP!
Okay, yesterday I was introduced to something pretty amazing. Some of you may roll your eyes at me simply because these kinds of things don’t float your boat, or some of you may be rolling your eyes because I am sooo late to the party.
What party is that? The castile soap party.
I’ve been trying to clean up my act lately when it comes to all-natural everyday items. I attempted coconut oil for a moisturizer, and I’m still thinking of diving back into it, but it left my sensitive skin with a few little bumps on my arms. I’m going with organic face lotions during the day and at night. I’m reevaluating body washes and shampoos, too.
The one thing I really wanted and never attempted? An all-natural all-purpose cleaner so I could toss the overbearing Lysol/Clorox-y fumes… and have piece of mind knowing exactly what I am spraying all over the house!
A fellow Pure Barre teacher/friend told me about a post from awhile back by one of my favorite home DIY blogs, Little Green Notebook. (Tangent: her DIY stuff is drop. dead. inspiring. It’s because of her that I can look at a crappy piece of furniture and be confident like “Duh, I can just spray paint it.”)
This blogger shows her long list of all-natural home cleaners so I naturally (pun intended) had to try them. First one on the list?
The all-purpose home cleaner. Castile soap + water + essential oils.
Welp, I didn’t have essential oils laying around at home, CVS didn’t sell them, and I wasn’t going to trudge through Miami traffic just to get myself to Whole Foods and hate my life in their parking garage. So I sucked it up and went without the essential oils.
Turns out that I think the essential oils bring a stronger scent to the cleaner so that it’ll stick around longer and freshen up your home. CVS only had the lavender or peppermint scented Dr. Bronner’s castile soaps so I chose lavender as it’s more all-around-the-home friendly.
What else can you use castile soap for?
- Body and face wash (trying that soon!)
- Shampoo (adult, baby, AND pet)
- Floor cleaner
- Toothpaste (I don’t think I’m this natural, but this may intrigue some of you)
So yeah, it’s kind of a miracle worker. I’ll keep you posted on my attempts at other uses for the soap, but for now I’ll be spraying lavender all over the house.
