event recap: Women’s Health fusion fest
Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend a pretty cool event hosted by Women’s Health magazine and exhale spa. In honor of the magazine’s Next Fitness Star competition, the spa hosted free Core Fusion classes all throughout the day (at multiple locations across the country), ending with a reception in the evening.
Let me start out with the main event: the Core Fusion Barre class. I noticed on the exhale class schedule that they were offering different styles of Core Fusion classes, like bootcamp, barre, sports, etc. I don’t really know the difference between the offerings, but I was really hoping to be able to attend the bootcamp session. Unfortunately my teaching schedule didn’t permit for me to make it to the bootcamp class. I grabbed my socks, threw on my most barre-friendly Lululemon, and drove over to the Epic Hotel, where the spa is located.
Once I arrived I was happy to see that the staff was well-prepared and ready to go. I was all flustered from trying to figure out parking, so I must have looked like a bat out of hell when I came through the doors. They got me signed in, introduced me to the instructor, and suddenly I was being shown which equipment I should gather up for the class. They were one well-oiled machine. I hate starting out an exercise class running late and feeling rushed, so they really helped mitigate my stress levels.
The class was relatively full so I mustered up the courage to take one of the two spots left in the very front of the room. Alexandra, the instructor, welcomed everyone and introduced us to one of the finalists of the Next Fitness Star competition! Now most of you know that this is a little bit of a sore subject for me–I applied to this contest, read my story here, and was sad when I never received the phone call that I was chosen to move to the next round. In the back of my mind there was a slight glimmer of hope that I could have wowed them, but I just wasn’t the right fit for the job. Now I know why: the semi-finalist at yesterday’s event was gorgeous. I’m not going to fall into a woe-is-me body image rant, but I didn’t stand a chance against someone like her. She was basically ripped out of the pages of Self magazine. Wanna know the worst part? The spot I chose at the front of the room was…you guessed it…right next to her. She was tanned, divinely fit, and decked out in a trendy Athleta outfit (yup, another sponsor of the contest).
The next hour was filled with pulses, light hand weights, barre work, and some seriously intense abdominal exercises, all done while next to a near supermodel. I am always blown away by the fact that such small, insignificant movements can be so darn difficult! Needless to say, I woke up this morning with a sore torso and some tightness in the random little muscles of my body. The class was worth it.
My only let-down of the day was that I wasn’t able to attend the evening reception. When I signed up for the event I was under the impression that the food samples, beverages, and giveaways would be throughout the day, but at the spa they informed me it was only from 5:00 to 9:00pm. Smack in the middle of my bootcamp teaching schedule. I was so looking forward to it, and I would have had great recap photos for you guys, but alas, the real world got in the way.
All in all it was an eye-opening day. I got to chat with one of the semi-finalists (by the way, she was super nice and enthusiastic) and fit in a good workout that I don’t normally do. I do wish I could have seen the evening reception and chatted with more fitness fiends like me, but time just didn’t permit. I gotta find more events like this one to grow my network of fit friends!
