host a fitness party!
Same story, different weekend: you find yourself at a bar or going to your friend’s house to log some hours of gossip or watching sports while drinking a cocktail, wine, or beer. It’s the same conversation, same location, same…everything. Being social should never be boring, so why settle for your monotonous routine?
I came across an article by SparkPeople awhile back and the author discussed a really fresh idea: hosting a fitness party. You’re already reading this blog so I assume you enjoy a good workout and healthy eats, so wouldn’t you love to attend a bash that includes these things? Exactly, me too.
So what is a fitness party? Anything you want it to be. The author of the article had a genius idea and organized a fitness DVD/equipment swap–you bring a DVD or piece of workout equipment you’re willing to part with, and you swap it with a friend for a new one. A free way to switch up your routine! She also had a local instructor stop by the party and teach some belly dancing moves. Pairing belly dancing with girlfriends makes for one giggly night. The author took the theme a step further and crafted an Eastern-themed menu of curries and exotic dishes. Each guest also left with a goody bag (remember those?!) containing a water bottle and pedometer. Doesn’t that sound like a fun get-together?
While you might be rolling your eyes thinking about tossing out a perfectly good happy hour or night at the club, think about how much fun it would be to burn calories, laugh with your friends, and show off your most flattering workout clothes. You achieve that multitasking dream every man and woman looks for–combining fitness, entertainment, and being social, sans hangover! For those of you who couldn’t dream of giving up your Friday or Saturday night for fitness, perhaps you could host or attend a fitness party on a Saturday or Sunday morning. I can just see it now–a cool sunny morning in Central Park, everyone brings their favorite healthy breakfast foods, and the fitness party commences. Not a bad way to spend time outdoors.
If I were to host my own party (which I fully intend on doing some day) I would probably consider having a trio of exercise options throughout the party: a bootcamp-style class, a dance class, and a yoga class. This then provides diverse options for all guests, and they can opt in and out of whichever activities they’d like, pressure-free. In an ideal world I’d have a running coach available to take a jog with guests and offer tips on form, gait, training, etc. Exercise videos would be playing (muted) on the TV to give workout inspiration for everyone, and the music playlist would be up-tempo and upbeat. There would absolutely be a DVD/equipment swap, and maybe even some contests to win more equipment. Finally, to be perfectly on trend, I’d have a local company stop by and hand out cold pressed juices, fresh produce, and healthy treats like chia seed pudding. Each guest would leave with a goody bag similar to what the author provided, and I would include fliers for local races, passes to exercise studios, coupons for running stores or nutritious grocers, and a small notebook for food journaling and tracking workouts. I’m sure I will come up with a million more ideas for a fitness party, I’m a die-hard event planner at heart…
Would you attend a fitness party? The real question is, would you give up your Friday or Saturday night for a fitness party? I’d love to host one, so maybe one day we’ll all be jamming to a dance class and swapping exercise tips together!
