running with a dog: I need your help!

running with a dog: I need your help!

We had a BIG day yesterday. My husband graduated from his MBA program and we picked up our new puppy. Yup, I said it. A puppy.

meet Gunnar!

Our schedule was quite chaotic–we woke up and drove over an hour each way to pick him up from a really awesome rescue shelter. After filling out the paperwork, letting him say his goodbyes to his friends, and a quick pit stop in the grass to empty his tank, off we were to his new home. He was actually really great in the car, no accidents!

oh you know, just a casual wild peacock hanging around near the shelter, no big deal

Once we got home we had to quickly clean up the house for our guests to arrive, and the whirlwind of a day continued from there. I’m so proud of my intelligent graduate!

So, the real point to my post today: exercising with your pet. Part of the reason we chose Gunnar is because of his build and potential to become a good dog to run with. I have had daydreams about going for a jog around the neighborhood with a pooch, and feeling safe and guarded while we’re out and about. But I don’t yet know about how to build him up to be able to run for an extended distance. When is he old enough to try running? Do you start really small, only like a block or two? How quickly do you add mileage? How do you know you’re not pushing him too hard? What about water, do you need to stop for an H2O break?

I’m so excited to get him started. I know it’s pretty far away from right now, especially since the stitches from his neutering surgery are still hanging around. He’s not even allowed to get silly and run outside!

Do any of you have dogs that you run with? Any secret tips or tricks? What’s the farthest distance you’ve run with your dog?
