when life gives you lemons (and water)…
A daily change that I have been trying to be consistent with is drinking tons of water with lemon throughout the day. I never really understood what the benefits of lemon water were, so I did some research!
- Detox: When you first wake up in the morning, drink a warm glass of water with lemon. According to Dr. Gillian McKeith in You Are What You Eat, the water flushes your bowels and cleans yesterday’s mucus out. TMI?!
- Detox Part II: In Jethro Kloss’s Back to Eden, lemon water is applauded for it’s contribution to liver function. The citrusy water helps dissolve uric acid and other poisons in the liver. Perhaps it’s a good idea to toss some lemon in H2O on a hungover morning…?
- Digestion: In this article, Ann Heustad, R.N. explains that lemon juice has digestive qualities that can calm the stomach, especially when it comes to heartburn and bloating.
- That-Time-of-the-Month: Heustad also mentions that those who suffer from excessive menstruation can likely benefit from the juice of three to four lemons each day.
So there you have it, some general benefits to drinking lemon water! In addition to those facts, I have heard on the street that along with the detox benefits of lemon water comes clearer skin…it’s worth a shot! I’ll let you know how my skin fares in about a month…
One last bonus: if you have a garbage disposal, throw in your used lemon wedges. The strong citrus helps freshen up the disposal!
